Berkeley High School (BHS) Civic Leaders Club is organizing the first student-led Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) School Board Forum at Berkeley High. The event will take place in the BHS Little Theater on October 8th, 2024 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.
This forum marks a historic moment for youth in Berkeley after nearly a decade advocating for measure Y1 (which passed with over 70% of the popular vote in 2016) 16 and 17-year-olds have the ability to vote in this year’s school board elections. A similar measure has also taken effect in Oakland.
Berkeley and Oakland are the first cities in California to enact legislation allowing people of 16 years and older to vote in school board elections. Albany may go even further with a measure on the ballot that would allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in both school board and city council races.
BHS Civic Leaders organized this forum with the aim of informing new voters about the upcoming School Board election. All five candidates are planning to attend. They will vote for 2.
