National Voter Registration Day was once again a success! On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, the League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville (LWVBAE) celebrated National Voter Registration Day, the country’s largest single-day voter registration drive, dedicated to getting eligible voters registered to vote. Nationwide, the League of Women Voters registered over 100,000 people and hosted over 500 registration events and virtual activations.
On the local level, the LWVBAE’s efforts included supplying registration literature – such as National Voter Registration Day stickers and posters, and quarter cards with QR codes for online registration – to Berkeley City College for their voter registration drive. Volunteers also coordinated with UC Berkeley’s student union vote coalition on their work, which included giving voter registration presentations at Berkeley High School (BHS) and tabling with voter registration forms in order to get high school students pre-registered to vote. LWVBAE high school interns at BHS also helped the UC Berkeley students through their own campaign as well.
These endeavors were largely coordinated by the LWVBAE’s Voter Service Director, Alex Li, who along with other volunteers also met with people and answered questions in order to assist voters with the logistics of voter registration. Thanks to the hard work of the membership, LWVBAE had a rewarding National Voter Registration Day.
However, the LWVBAE’s registration efforts aren’t over yet! For the month of October, the League’s Albany Youth Council at Albany High School is preparing for its annual pre-registration campaign. The Youth Council will be giving presentations on pre-registration and the importance of voting to all the eleventh and twelfth grade classes, as well as handing out registration forms, in order to get as many Albany High sixteen to seventeen year olds pre-registered to vote as possible. Stay tuned for future updates!
