Charlene Harrington, PhD, RN, will present:
- an overview of US nursing home quality and nurse staffing along with current policy efforts to set national minimum staffing standards and stronger regulatory oversight
- the latest research on the impact of for-profit ownership, private equity investors, and real estate trusts on quality and staffing
- policy proposals to set ownership criteria and to oversee poor performing facilities
- practical advice on how individuals can protect and advocate for themselves, their friends, and family members who need short-term rehabilitation or long term care
- advocacy groups trying to bring about change.
Charlene Harrington, PhD., RN, is Professor Emerita in nursing and sociology at the University of California San Francisco. She has studied nursing homes and long term care programs for 40 years including quality, staffing, ownership, and financing. She has been active in nursing home policy at the national level especially over the past four years with President Biden’s nursing home reform initiative.
